Does your office utilize amalgam-type fillings and what is the latest word on their safety?

Over the past years, there have been concerns raised about amalgam fillings, otherwise known as “silver-colored” fillings. Because amalgam contains the toxic substance mercury, it has been linked to a number of diseases including autism spectrum disorder, Alzheimer's, and Multiple Sclerosis, particularly the role of mercury as an exacerbating factor of the disease. Though the American Dental Association (ADA) and the FDA have not found any significant link between mercury-based fillings and disease, research studies show mercury proven to be much more toxic than composite (100-800 fold more toxic than composite in human cells). As an office that emphasizes preventive health in dental medicine and operates based on a patient-centered philosophy, our interest always lies in the long-term care of our patients. For this reason, we refrain from the use of amalgam fillings in our office as our goal is to optimize future health and minimize any potential negative health effects related to the oral health of our patients.
